Commercialisation Pathways and Advice

Technologies can be taken to market through a variety of routes. A technology owner may manufacture and distribute a product themselves or they may license the technology to a company who then further develops the technology and eventually takes it to the market.  In many cases, an experienced adviser can recommend which of these options best suits a particular technology. This section details Bio Innovation SA’s capabilities in technology commercialisation and provides some useful links.

Key issues to think about include:

  • Who owns the intellectual property and can it be licensed or assigned?
  • What competitors or competitor products exist?
  • Are there clear key factors that differentiate this technology from other products already on the market or in late stage development?
  • Where, when and how will the necessary funding be sourced?
  • What is an investor's ‘exit strategy’ likely to look like, IPO or trade sale?

Bio Innovation SA Capabilities

Bio Innovation SA staff offer direct experience in commercialisation options and a strong understanding of the market forces that drive the uptake of new products. This includes successful out- and in-licensing of numerous products and technologies, the formation and management of start-up and spin-off companies, and capital raising for early-stage ventures. In addition, Bio Innovation SA offers an extensive network of industry, investment and advisory contacts in SA, Australia and overseas that can provide further advice and assistance to companies.

Bio Innovation SA Conditional Grants

Funding through the Bio Innovation SA Commercial Development and Business Development Initiatives can be used at this stage for such activities as business planning and market research. Applications are open anytime and are assessed by merit criteria as defined in the grant guidelines.
